About Mundan Ceremony
Clearing the Oldest Debt Before the Child Even Knows It Exists
The Mundan Ceremony, also known as Chudakarana, is described in the Paraskara Grihya Sutra and the Ashvalayana Grihya Sutra as one of the most important early-childhood Samskaras. The hair that a child is born with is considered to carry the karmic impressions of previous lives — and the act of cutting it for the first time, with proper Vedic ritual, formally severs this residual connection and allows the child to grow into their current life with full freedom. Lord Vishnu, Chandra (the Moon deity who governs hair and rhythm), and Prithvi (the Earth Goddess who receives the offering) are all invoked during this ceremony.
The Power of E-Pooja: Same Ritual, Same Results
Many parents feel the Mundan must happen at a sacred temple — Tirupati, Kashi, Trimbakeshwar — and that a home-based or online ceremony somehow falls short. The Vedic tradition actually makes no such distinction. What the ritual requires is correct Mantra — the specific verses from the Grihya Sutras addressed to Lord Vishnu, Chandra, and Prithvi; pure Samagri — the offerings including Durva grass, flowers, and the sacred vessel for the hair; and a Sankalpa — in which the child’s name, Gotra, age, and home coordinates are formally taken. At AtoZPandit.com, a barber performs the physical cutting at your home as guided live by the Acharya on screen.

When & How This Pooja Helps Your Life
Mundan is traditionally performed in the child’s first year, or in the third year if the first year was inauspicious. According to the Grihya Sutras, odd years (1st, 3rd, 5th) are preferred. The ceremony brings:
• Karmic Purification from the Previous Life: The Paraskara Grihya Sutra specifically describes the birth hair as a carrier of Sanchita Karma — accumulated impressions from past lives. Offering this hair through the ritual formally releases the child from those impressions and allows their current life’s karma to unfold freely.
• Healthy Hair and Scalp Growth: The act of cutting the birth hair from the root, combined with the application of sacred paste to the scalp, is associated in tradition with the stimulation of healthy new hair growth.
• Chandra’s Blessing for Emotional Balance: The Moon deity Chandra governs the mind and emotional life. His specific invocation during the Mundan is a request for the child’s emotional nature to be balanced, calm, and resilient as they grow.
• Protection Through the Transition: The period immediately after the first haircut is considered a transitional window in the child’s energetic life. The ritual mantras provide a protective boundary around the child during this window.
The Vidhi: Step-by-Step Process of the Ritual
1. Ganesh Puja: Lord Ganesha is invoked to remove all obstacles and ensure the ceremony and the child’s continued growth proceed without difficulty.
2. Vishnu and Chandra Avahan: Lord Vishnu and the Moon deity Chandra are formally welcomed and asked to bless the child and the act of offering being made on their behalf.
3. Sankalpa: The child’s name, Gotra, age in months or years, and home coordinates are formally taken, dedicating the entire ritual to this specific child’s karmic purification.
4. Raksha Mantra: A protective mantra is chanted while a sacred thread is tied around the child’s wrist, creating an energetic shield for the transition period.
5. Ritual Cutting (Chuda Karma): The Acharya directs the cutting of the first lock of hair with specific mantras chanted at each stage. The barber performs the physical cutting at home as guided on screen.
6. Hair Offering: The cut hair is placed in a banana leaf or vessel with specific offerings and set aside for ritual disposal — offered to flowing water, buried in earth, or as guided by the Acharya for NRI families.
7. Scalp Anointing and Aarti: A paste of turmeric and sandalwood is applied to the child’s fresh scalp as a healing and protective blessing, followed by the closing Aarti celebrating the child’s renewed and cleansed beginning.
